The Meta Self

The Book That Dissolves Problems in a Single Reading

One sitting is the entire commitment. Two thousand people have already been measured doing it.

Trial 3 · The design

A book, treated like a treatment.

Self-help is one of the largest publishing categories on earth and one of the least examined. The Meta Self was put through the procedure a clinical intervention goes through: preregistration, random allocation, a control group, validated instruments, and follow-up at a week and a month.

Participants

2,004

Randomly allocated 1,002 to the reading condition and 1,002 to control. Groups matched at baseline on every measure (all p > .20).

Exposure

One

A single complete reading, in one sitting. No practice, no follow-up exercises, no course.

Measured at

4 points

Before reading, immediately after, at one week, and at one month.

Instruments

5

PSS-EMA, STAI-S, PANAS positive and negative affect, and the Subjective Vitality Scale.

Retention

92%

922 of 1,002 readers still reporting at the 30-day measurement.

Same-day results · Reading group

What moved, and by how much.

Each bar shows the change in the reading group. The hatched marker behind it is the control group over the same hours — the shift that would have happened anyway.

Change from pre-reading to immediately after, within completers (n = 970 reading, 932 control). d is the between-group effect size on change scores. All five comparisons p < .0001.

The author

Nina Verkoeyen, PhD

Nina Verkoeyen is the founder of the Meta Spirituality paradigm, developed over more than twenty years of teaching. She earned her Ph.D. in psychology in Russia and directs a coach certification program that has trained more than 500 certified facilitators across 42 countries.

Her research program includes four preregistered randomized controlled trials and a validated psychometric instrument, the Meta Self Scale. She writes and teaches in Russian and English.

The trial described on this page is the third in that program: a single-reading bibliotherapy trial with 2,004 participants.

The book

What it actually does.

There is no technique in this book. No practice to maintain, no steps, no thirty-day plan. It works on the one thing every other method leaves untouched: the self that generates the problems in the first place.

Nina Verkoeyen calls that self the Default Self — the identity we carry from birth without suspecting another exists. Therapy improves it. Coaching optimizes it. Manifestation decorates it. It goes on producing problems either way. The book dissolves it, and what remains is what she names the Meta Self.

The shift is designed to happen while you read, which is why the trial measured readers the same day rather than a month afterward.

There is a version of you that has no problems. This version does not simply cope with problems better. It has stopped creating them.

The Meta Self, opening lines

A happier false self is still a false self.

Chapter 1

Meta Spirituality · The Meta Self Scale

The paradigm that dissolves the ego and increases agency at the same time

Nina needed a questionnaire that did not exist, so she built one.

Spiritual traditions have always said the same thing about losing the ego. You lose your desires along with it. No ambition, no drive, no wanting anything, and very little interest in running an ordinary life. Nina Verkoeyen kept seeing the opposite in the people she worked with. Their ego-self lost its grip and they became more decisive, more capable and more in charge of their own lives at the same time.

She wanted to show that with numbers instead of stories. Some questionnaires measure how far the ego has dissolved. Others measure how much control a person feels over their life. Not one of them asked about both, so there was no way to show that the two arrive together. The Meta Self Scale was built to ask both questions in one place.

PREREGISTRATION

Why it had to be built

Everyone says you have to choose one or the other

Ask almost anybody what happens when the ego dissolves and you get the same picture back. A person who wants nothing, decides nothing and withdraws from ordinary life. Traditions call it renunciation, popular spirituality repeats it, and psychology built its instruments on the same idea. The scales that measure self-transcendence ask how much of the ordinary self has loosened and stop there. Whether a person can still run their life is measured by other researchers, in a different field, with different questionnaires.

01

That is not what Nina watched happen. People who went through the shift started making decisions faster, arguing less, and taking on things they had been avoiding for years. Their ego-self had loosened its grip and their sense of being the author of their own life had gone up, both at once, which is exactly what this paradigm sets out to do.

If the two rise together, one questionnaire has to ask about both. Until this one, none did.

02

Showing that requires one questionnaire that asks about both, and there was not one. A scale that only measures dissolution cannot tell the difference between a person who has come together and a person who has come apart, because the two of them answer those questions the same way. So the Meta Self Scale puts authorship in the same instrument as dissolution, expansion and unity: four dimensions, sixteen questions, one score.

The validation study

1,652 people, and every decision lodged in advance

A single-session online survey. Hypotheses, exclusion criteria and the analysis plan were all published on the Open Science Framework before any data was collected, which means the exclusions below were rules rather than choices.

THE FLAGSHIP RETREAT OF META SPIRITUALITY

The Meta Self Retreat

The last spiritual retreat you’ll ever need.

Fourteen days online, in one group, beginning on the first of the month. A permanent change in who you take yourself to be, measured in a randomized trial of 1,204 people. Nothing to swallow, nothing to practise, nothing to keep doing when it ends.

Book your place
See the evidence

WHAT THIS IS

The book was the birth. This is the embodiment.

Reading The Meta Self introduces you to it and brings it into existence. Fourteen days of full immersion is where it stops being something you have discovered and becomes the self you operate from daily, in your work, in your kitchen, in the middle of an argument.

You are not learning a practice to perform for twenty minutes a day. You are learning to live as the Meta Self around the clock, which is a different order of change from anything that has to be repeated to keep working. When the fourteen days end, nothing switches off, because there was never a switch.
